Hey just wanted to ask a question do all jarini arowanas grow up to look alike?like red dots on a dark fin and red on top of the scales? The reason why I'm asking is because in my lfs he has a adult called red spot arowana I'm sure it was a jardini with just red colorings selling for 380 and another store with a similar labeled as jardini for 150? Are these "red spots" a high quality strand? Or does all jardinis grow up the same with some a variety of food and care? The same store also had a 2" baby jardini with the same red dots on the tails which I never seen, but all regular jardinis are blue tail with yellow dots?

there is three different kinds of jardini...one is the lei arowana..and the other two are similar except for the coloring..your cheap arowana is the black dark looking one...the more expensive is the golden, light brown with red spots which is more expensive...$380 is way to much for it anyways....you could find it for cheaper price...

Lol! A Lie is not a Jardini is a completely different species.

As far as I know there are only two species of Australian arowna. One is the famous Pearl arowana (Scleropages jardini) or just JARDINI. Jars color and pattern can varied. The other one is called Spotted arowana (Scleropages leichardti).

Well put, nothing like good information.....How is a lei a jar?

I currently have 4 6" jar in my tank 2 are darker with more red/orange on fins while the other 2 just mostly pearl. The paterns of all 4 are the same with the darker ones shown more colors. from 4 feet away you cannot see any dots on the pearl ones.

I've also seen some jardinis with vastly different colors. The common one that I see around is the brownish one. But I recently saw some jardinis that had a light/silverish body with a yellowish tail. I thought it was a lei at the time but decided that it couldn't be cuz it was so cheap and didn't look like the leis that I saw online.

Would these two grow up with different colors?

jardinis vary in color b.c of there enviroment and leis are different as small leis iv seen are bluish silver with red spots

scleropages leichardti are from south east queensland Australia. limited to one main river, the fitsroy and its offshoots. these are stocked in impoundments all up the east coast of australia. under government permission for angling purposes.
(as are sometimes jars.)

they have a longer thinner body and tend to have yellow tinge to tail fin with red lines too. eyes are more so toward the top of the head. there is more of a silver green colour to the body with very little red from what i can see.

Scleropages jardinni are from the gulf of carpentaria area but range from the top of cape york and then west into top western australia.
they are not as thin but rather broad and tall and have red dots on the tail and red in the scale.
the same named species is also coming from papua new guinea.
this may explain two different phenos you are seeing.

however of course there are different colours amongst offspring and from different areas. there was a story about someone finding whole red tailed jars, though i think these lost the red tail as they aged. i recall some guy in the US taking them and breeding them thinking he had a new strain.

you could get jar fish from northern australia or you get get fish from papua area.
fish are sent from both areas with bulk fish being sent in the past from papua and then into singapore and distributed throughout the world.
higher priced jars could likley come from australia.
though years back there was somone in north australia sending them OS but once cheaper fish came from the wild from the islands to our north it became harder for him to compete. i would guess that someone would be sending them O.S again.

jars will change colour depending on tank etc. a happy jar can be very vibrant otherwise they could look washed out.
