Hello everyone! I'm new here. I recently rescued a catfish from a VERY terrible situation. I have posted my inquiry to id this fish for me on planetcatfish.com and fishforums.com. the best answer i've gotten is that its a jau-zungaro zungaro(which I can't keep very long-its already at least a footost on fishforums.com where you can read the whole situation & view the pics i have posted. I'll be posting more pics(full-body) at the request of the people at planetcatfish.com so they can help give me a definate answer. I just figured maybe someone here can confirm/rule out whether this is a jau. Also, if it is, maybe someone has some info I haven't found? Thanks in advance for any help!:1zhelp:

Definitely a jau. From everything I know They are fairly slow growers compared to rtc, and tsn. They get way the hell bigger though. If you decide to give him up, and would be willing to ship, I would definitely take him off your hands. Otherwise I can help you find a really good home for him. There needs to be a very selective process to decide who you will let house this fish in the future. The minimum tank size you should look for in a potential owner would be a bare minimum of 1000 gals. 2000+ would be great. Hope this helps. Pretty sure the world record is well over 200 lbs. I haven't seen one on here in a long time. Very fascinating pick up. Where did you rescue him from?

oh for additional info go to fishbase.org, and look up zungaro zungaro

here's a picture of an adult, I believe the world record.

Paulicea Lutkeni is on bottom

Look closely at your pictures, they are the same species, the one on bottom is juvenile, and the one on top is adult. They no longer use the scientific name Paulicea Lutkeni, it is now just Zungaro zungaro. Check these sites www.planetcatfish.com, and www.fishbase.org, some sites still list Lutkeni, mainly because it is a recent change within the last 3 years I believe. Sorry for any confusion, just do a little research and you will see what I mean. Don't trust me, but do the research on your own, they are the same species. Zungaro zungaro is the valid name.

Thanks guys! I honestly knew all that by the time I posted here though. Thats all I've been doing is research since I got him.:mwave:
I got some full body pics and will be posting them at the same link above momentarily. I know its going to be hard to find him a suitable home, but after everything I've put into him already, I'm determined. I suppose I could ship, if you think it's a good idea. I just really hate to see a box get kicked or dropped or lost.....seen too much of that at the pet store...:uhoh: Otherwise, I already had plans to visit my lfs(pretty reputable in these parts) to see if they knew anyone off-hand or if they thought they could find someone. Also I plan to call some people I know with definate background and ability. If they aren't willing, they know other people, etc, etc. Oh, he was a rescue from a co-worker whose ex son-in-law abandoned him with the daughter who refused to go NEAR the tank for the 8 months she had it! Its a miracle he survived....the water was black, there were SOOO MANY toys and various other things dumped in the tank.....:WTF: is WRONG with people??? and how is it that such a useless person acquire/neglect such a great fish??? I really wish I could keep him. Especially the longer I have him. He's very interesting and interactive. AWESOME fish!
