Java fern Propogation

OK I have Java ferns in my 29 gallon tank. Rhizomes are attached to driftwood with rubber bands and have attached themselves in most cases. One has attached itself to some small rocks as well. The new plants grow out of the leaves and then detach creating a new plant (common knowledge I assume)

Ok my question is: Why do I have all these little plants growing on the leaves when every planted tank I see around the web has big thick bunches of mature leaves and no little ones growing from them? Am I doing something wrong? I've had these plants for 6-8 months, and have hardly any new leaves, just new baby plants... I can get pics if needed

My problem is just the opposite.

sounds like water conditions are not optimal for growth so the plant is sending out little plants in search of a more suitable spot to grow

C02 is your friend...

CO2 is not needed. What are your parameters, and lighting? Also, do you have ferts?

I see. OK I guess i need to get some info for you guys. I was using seachem c02 plant fertilizer until I overdosed it on accident (see thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64768&highlight=disaster). So I've been gun shy ever since, but I'm not sure how much good it was doing.

I'll get back to you with the lighting and water parameters. If not tonight then tomorrow I'm off work.

Is there some kind of test I can use to tell me my nutrient levels? From what I've been reading they are VERY important and could contribute to algae growth. THX

I personally use the Red Sea Fresh Lab deluxe, and it has many of the tests I need. I also use several API tests.

Dosing ferts will help, and monitoring your params will also help. The ferns look very healthy.

I'm imagining that its possible to have the right balance of fish and plants such that the fish waste/bio created can support the plants.

Could this be possible in a small tank like this? I have heard of people with filterless tanks before but wasn't sure what to think of that
