Hi guys,

I bought some java fern today and had some questions. Could I cut the bulb/roots at the bottom and separate the plant, making two plants?

I can see at the tip of some of the leaves a small set of roots growing. I know this is how the plant normally reproduces, but when could I cut these and make these individual plants and where do I cut?

Also, I got some of those smooth river rocks, should I attach them to that or small pieces of driftwood? My question is would the smooth rocks work too? What is best to tie the plant with? Could I use sowing string? Thanks

Cotton string will work the best. You can cut the rhizome right down the center if you wish. The smooth rocks should work fine, just clip the roots back a little, and then attach the java fern to the rock with cotton string. Make sure to tie the roots down as well.

Cotton is all I would use. You can use synthetic materials, but they have to be removed after several months.

I use fishing string..you cant see it, and you have to cut it out a few months later

Anyone know how I am suppose to separate the baby plants growing roots form the mother plant?

I usally wait untill they get to be about one inch then pull them off and let them float in the tank. About once a month I take all of these little guys and tie them to a small pc of drift wood. My tank is slowly getting filled with Java Fern

Will java fern grow in a tank with stock lights, no ferts and no C02? How about anubias? I was thinking about throwing some in a tank I have with just stock lights.

Man, my 38gal has an 18watt T8 bulb over it, and my Anubias nana thrives. ive got 4 plants with 2" rhizomes, all cuttings from the same original plant i got in january.
I have a very small java fern, and it does Ok, but ive never retrieved baby plants after theyve fallen off the original plants leaves. if i did i would have like 8 java ferns now.
I dont use CO2 or ferts, never have.
in fact, its almost time for my to split my anubias again and tie down the cuttings elsewhere in the tank.
