Hello guys, I want to have an aquarium with lawn-like carpet covering substrates. I believe they are called "Java Moss". My question is:

If I buy a handful amount will they spread all over the tank overtime?
If I put some java moss in a transparent jar toward direct sunlight, will they thrive?

Edit: Maybe its hairgrass, but my tank is not directed to the window(low light).
Whichever is easier to care for.

well java moss could spread over the substrate but is typically used for walls instead of a lawn, but I have it in a low light set up and it growing well, if i remember correctly dwarf hairgrass has higher lighting needs

Dwarf Hairgraas would work really good, im acauly doing the same and im going to use dwarf hairgrass but i have a nice light, 2 in fact. I don't think it needs a lot of light, more like medium light. are you just using the sun for light or do you have a light on the tank? I dont think java moss would be a good pick, because it grows so dam fast and doesn't look like grass, another alterantive choice can be micro sowrd, it kinda looks like grass not as much as the dwarf hair grass, i say get a good light and go for dwarf hair grass.

I believe Dwarf Hairgrass can grow in any light, however it does need rich gravel.

Java moss is for attaching to decoration. You are more than welcome to give it a try as a carpet. It will spread out overtime but it differs from tank to tank how fast it grows.

I don't use any aquarium lighting on my 75g. My window orients south and its still bright during the day. Do you guys know any other aquatic plants that can live in low light conditions?

U can use it as a carpet i have it done in my 10 gallon. Spread it evenly weighting with some grawel it will grow thru. Just let me warn u its heck of a job trimming it. I have pieces flovintg around tank week later
