I have some Java Moss waiting for me at the post office. Question I have is, should I attach it to my driftwood in a separate tank or will it be fine with my fish? I only have 3 moonlight gouramis, each at about 3 inches, and a golden algae eater, also about 3 inches.

From what I've experienced, no fish will eat java moss. Not sure if it's the flavor, lol. So it will be ok anywhere.

yeah, that's what i've heard and influenced me to get the java moss. guess i'll give it a try and hope my fish won't just pick at it for fun. thanks.

its a real ugly plant, but whatever floats your boat

i beg to dither. i have seen more beautiful moses but java moss once thick and dense can look very good.

i picked up my moss today. it looked kinda terrible, it was about 95% brown and 5% green. the seller does have a guarantee if the plant doesn't make it, but is there anything i can do to get whatever is left to grow? right now i rubber banded a clump to my driftwood in my tank, and most of it is in a separate tank with it's own 18" 15w 6500k fluorescent light.

so, does light help it grow or does light hurt it, seeing as how it's a low-light plant? too much of a good thing = a bad thing?

does java moss that's brown turn back to green or is it officially dead?

I'm sure that it will do fine. Java moss is really tough stuff.

I wouldn't use a rubber band, try some fishing line.

IME, java moss grows amazingly in a wide range of lights. Just try to keep it short. Long strands seem to shade the base and prevent it from growing in thick.

Rubberbands are fine. Java moss does not do well under high lighting. My 135 can't grow the stuff, but my son's 2.5 gallon with an incandescent bulb grows it like mad.

you can put some in a five gallon bucket with some tank water in it and put it outside in an area where it wont be pounded with sunlight and increase your colonies size if you like

Plants only use oxygen at night when the lights are out. During the day when they photosynthesize they use carbon dioxide. Java moss is an easy to grow plant with VERY low co2 needs.
