in summary, and just to reiterate:

- yes, the gar will be fine...was just stressed, so all it needed was time to come around. sounds like it's recovered now.

- no, 100% are not a good idea...if you want to do big water changes and do them frequently, go with about 50% every other week and you'll be fine. no need to remove the fishes...especially with gars, this added stress/transport can lead to breaking their backs.

good luck--

thankies much- hey live and learn you know, i love my boy- i feel bad stressing him out :(

ROFL spatula!!
any ways like solomon said and everyone else no 100% wc. i do even do that and i have 4 gars quite a bit larger than urs. nose is minor and will heal. i had one of my gars take a 3 foot header onto the floor 3 times while trying to acclimate that bugger when i first got him. damaged his nose bad. gave it time and all is well and i cant even tell which one broke it.

also when u do WC watch ur siphon. I have had my gar many times swim up the giant tube. just sayin

Some gars can survive out of water longer than other fish My gar had been outside my tnk for at least 20 mins before i noticed he was out. of the tank. i notice he has a little scar on his nose just monitor it make sure it does no get infected whic i am sure it ownt but the little guy is a cutie I love gars the thing i like about them is wen they paddle backwards hahah

Like they said, cut down on the wc and why do you need to take the fish out of the tank???
I know you are doing up to 100% wc but you dont have to take him out!!!
Good lucj and hope he heals.

Yikes 3 times.. Okay i dont feel as bad now. I totally got it NO 100% WC..lol Its DRILLED in my Brain.. congrats, i have now been paddled with
the No 100% WC paddle..lol

LOL My guy is TERRIFIED of the siphon and it's smaller than he is...lol he swims off to the other side of the tank like "Ahhhh :nilly: what is that thing!!"

thanks for the tip i have that issue with my feeder fish tank, their not smart..lol i wish i could place a drain in the middle of the tank.

I've had 2 different gar take a flying leap (out of a net) and fall 6 feet to a hardwood floor. They get a little stunned and are stressed out for a couple days after, but they both came right back and are as healthy as ever. They're pretty tough fish, and can take a bit of a pounding.

thank god i've never seen a 24" gar fly out of a tank...i really wouldn't want to hear it smack on the ground.

it makes u cringe :(
