I've had my jd since last november. He is in a 55gal with 1 senegal bichir which is much smaller than him. They both were the same size and introduced sametime, they don't fight or anything. They sometimes eat together. Problem i'm having is, the JD hides all the time in his pot. When I feed him he won't even eat until I turn all the lights off and walk away. If I come back and he isn't hid, he will freak out and crash into my heater or the hood, etc. Everytime. I don't know what to do. My senegal hides a lot to, but that's normal I do believe. But my senegal will actually come out and eat at the surface in front of me no problem, but not my jd. What should I do? Should I get some dither fish? :nilly:

anyone? im not sure I can use any dithers, since I have a sb. Not sure if he will even come out to eat if I had dithers, may scare him? lol

Take out all hiding spots.

See, don't think I would take out all the hiding spots.

My JD's are also very shy. They don't like being the center of attention the way my Oscars do. They don't hide ALL the time, but a good fair amount of it they do.

You could try dithers, that might work.. or perhaps he's just a shy guy :)

If the fish don't see him that much, then the fish will always run away when they see him. I say, take all the decor out of the tank and let the fish get to know you, and then you can add the decor.

But yes, JD's are alittle on the shy shy side.

^ I do see your point... but won't that also make him a bit more nervous as well, and stress out the fish?

Perhaps not take out all the decor - maybe leave him one little hiding place?

My JDs are actually pretty friendly and don't hide as much as is typical for JDs. I've given them a lot of stacked rock structures, which are open, and one cave for hiding. They seem to like it. Only hide if they get scared, or if they're sleeping. But I think they feel more comfortable with the rocks stacked high, instead of low hiding spots. Maybe try that?

Just spend a few minute a day just looking at him and feed him when he is looking, he'll come around.
