How do you tell if the JD are male or female. I have two in my tank and they use to hate each other. Always would be on different sides of the tank and now they are always together and playing with each other.

The bottom of the gill plate on females has a lot of refractive Blue splotches…

The bottom of the gill plate on males are generally bland…

The “gill plate” is the part that covers the fish’s gills.

We hear a lot of concepts about head shape, body shape and other coloration. But in my experience these traits have far more to do with genetics than they do gender…

The gill plate is the only way I sex my JDs and I have had tremendous success doing so…

PS - I have over a dozen adult Dempseys and a couple thousand JD fry…

thanks for the info. I did sex them and i have a male and female. are there any certain conditions that i need to watch for to get them to breed.

thanks again.
