ok here goes

500 gal tank
full grown dovii
full grown J dempsey
well fed constantly

what are the chances of these getting along?

and a full grown oscar instead of the j dempsey? in the same scenario

:feedback: :OMG: :headbang2

I f you were to try it i would add alot more then what you mentioned. I would throw in a JD and a Oscar and maybe 8 Tinfoil barbs as dithers. I f you put just the JD and Wolf together in that tank the wolf will surely eventually kill the JD unless your lucky but i doubt it.......

the dovii WILL eventually kill all the fish you have just mentioned. these things get more than twice the size of ANY jack dempsey, and are WAY WAY too aggressive to even think of putting an oscar in with. save yourself the money and buy some REAL tankmates

Central i completley agree with you on aggression of the dovii but remember this is a 500gal. tank. So if he starts all of them off young this is a chance of it working but only because of it being a huge tank. If it was under 300 gallons it would be disaster..... And IMO dovii is an awesome fish but what a waste for a 500gal. tank. You could have 8-10 big aggressive cichlids, or a nice arowana tank with silver dollars or red hooks. All kinds of options with such a huge tank, so if it was me if your stuck on the dovii buy him a 250 and do something else with your 500 or get rid of the dovii and start over with your options because you have alot of them with a 500gal.

id still say that the dovii will literally destroy all those fish once he hits a size of 15" or so. i have had an 11" male that ruled the roost in my 300 over much larger fish. all fish are different, but i have seen dovii work their way up the pecking order till they have the tank the way they want it. ALL TO THEMSELVES. an 18 to 20" dovii WILL kill your dempsey and tinfoils and oscars eventually. you would have to have many many hiding spots or one by one most would be taken out. of course i have seen crazy things work out which are normally warned against but just like with triggers in salt water, everything seems fine one day, but the next everything is jammed into one corner of the tank scared for their lives

stuff will survive dude. come on though. at least put in other big tough fish. the fish mentioned so far dont hold a candle to a dovii in size or aggression. a large fenestratum or some large cats maybe some tri macs, devils or midas. just not oscars dempseys or tinfoils. not that you couldnt mix them but id bet against it for the long term survival of them

Fishman on WW if I am not mistaken had a 20" dovii in a 400 gal with a 15" midas,15" jag and a RTC. The dovii easily dominated both cichlids and forced them into one corner of the tank. That dovii was not even all that aggresive as dovii usually are and was being kept with two other large heavy duty CA's. The average dovii in a 500 gallon tank would rip any dempsey apart.

My 9" female dovii tore up a 13" managuense in one night in a 125. A 20" male dovii would be many times more aggresive. IMO its not even worth trying.

thanks man. dempseys would be food. most other large cichlids would end up like my pitbulls chew toys. but hey, it might be cool to do a documentary from time of purchase till time of death on all the other tank inhabitants
