My JD has grown about 2" in length since i got him about a month and a half ago, but he isnt growing in width or height. what can i feed him to make him get fatter and taller? if there is way lol
I've noticed that with the fish that I keep that their areas of growth will change throughout their lives. Sometimes my fish will grow longer for a few weeks or months and then they will begin to put on weight for another few months. This goes on for most of my fish. I feed my fish quality pellets as well as some frozen and live foods. The age of your fish probably has a lot to do with its type of growth too.
once a week i get 20 rosy reds from a respectable lfs that i know wont have disease ridden feeders. he also gets NLS cichlid formula 1mm pellets (i got him when he was 2 inches so 1mm was the perfect size) and i freeze dried blood worms. and sometimes night crawlers which he loves. but the feeders also get eaten by the blood parrot and the channel cat which are both also about 4 inches. i feed the pellets once in the morning and once at night
Unless you just like to give your fish a chance to hunt for food feeding Rosies isn't really necessary, especially if you're already feeding them NLS and Bloodworms. The NLS Pellets should be enough to supply your fish with the nutrition that they need without the risk of parasites. Even some of the best LFS can unknowingly have disease carrying livestock. So be careful.
im always careful about that, if theres one fish in the feeder tank that looks wrong then i wont get them. and i heard that feeding live fish is good for growth? is that not true? and also there 20 for a dollar and they last about a day but they're full so i dont have to feed them for another day. plus i like seeing them "hunt" the fish its kind of amusing lol
I've had my JD for about 6 month and though he's doubled in length I haven't seen a lot of difference in his bulk. I think it's just how they grow when they are little.
It sounds like you are giving plenty of food and a pretty good variety. If you want to see them "hunt" then keep tossing live worms in there. I'm not gonna blow you smoke for the feeder fish, you seem to understand the potential risk and it's your fish after all. And like someone already eluded to, sometimes growth is kind of spurty. Just be patient.
JD's will tend to grow more in length than they will height or width. They will bulk out when they get older thought. If you aren't seeing any odd behavior I wouldn't worry about it. And I also think the feeders aren't needed and the nls and bloodworm should be plenty.
I have 2 JD's in my 125 one is 9" the other is 6" the 9" is far more bulky than the 6".
I feed mine a pellet/freeze dried mix and lots of frozen foods(bloodworms, brine, freshwater frenzy). Growth has been about an inch every month. Most of it's length although mine is starting to get thicker due to his discovery of the pleco feeding at night.... He's a pig.
