wanna set up a 33 long tank (48"x13"x12") with an overhead planter sump. also have a jd thats kinda the odd man out in any of my tanks. too aggro for the community tank but gets beat up by my flowerhorn or red devil in their tanks. wanted to try her out in a 33 long with a raphael cat for company. possibly add a male jd in the future if i found a nice one.

is it too small? the 33 has plenty of length. same footprint as a standard 55. and the jd doesnt ever seem to move out of the bottom half of the 75 gallon its in.

I would say for a lone female it will be okay, I would not add a male. Even alone, I think a male would eventually get too big, also I think the pair would be too much bioload for the tank. I have kept grow-out cichlids in a 33 long until about 7" and it seemed like enough space, though at that size you really notice how short the tank is.

yeah i would definitely switch back to the 75 if i wanted a pair. alternatively i could do some acaras and corys or a group of geos. what would you say to five redhead tapajos in the 33 long? i have one but he needs friends.

Sounds like you have an extra 33 long And a female jd you are looking to Home.

I think it would solve your stocking issue and add an interesting tank- that would allow you to experiment with an overhead sump.

I’m more curious about the setup of the sump

dont have the tank yet but its a prospective black friday purchase hehe.

ive made an overhead sump for the 75 already. it works pretty well but think it will handle the 33 better volume wise.20171108_171805.jpg i wanted to streamline the look for this tank though. trying to create a junglescape with some of my indoor plants next to my sliding glass door.

heres some pictures of my first setup. ive since added some ferns and more dividers.

gotcha. i just have one redhead and he is still small. heard they only got to 4 or 5 inches and liked groups so thought it might work.

ive seen pothos online but not at my local pond shop. any good live plant dealers youd recommend?

Pothos are super common, you can get them at home depot. Might be called devil's ivy or golden ivy, they have different common names for it.
The Tapajos do only get around 4-6", but like to be in groups as you stated, and there won't be enough space for 4-5 of these fish in this tank. Even in a 55, that would be cramped IMO.

found some pothos at lowes a couple weeks ago and its doing great. i haven't noticed any effect on my nitrate levels but i don't know if the roots have completely taken hold yet and the nitrates werent high to begin with. gonna rig up the light so its over the planter next and make a sturdier mount for the sump.

want to find some good ferns to add in cause the ferns i had before didnt take off/died.
