It should be fine. Widest part of it is about 15 inches and the narrowest is 12 inches I'm assuming. I don't see how a 55 would work but a 46 BF wouldn't. Standard 55 gallons are only 12 inches wide.

55's are 4 feet in length though

Finally got a pic. I think it's female(can someone help id). About 9 years old and had a pretty rough life. I know the 46 bow is pushing it but it will live out it's life in peace without the fire mouth chasing it around.

Poor thing looks stunted. I'm having a hard time figuring out gender... there's not as much blue on the operculum as you usually find in a typical female, and there's quite a bit of spangling on the body which would lead more towards male. Is he/she eating ok?

He/she looks stressed, the poor thing. I'm betting that 46 gallon is going to seem like heaven now. Congrats on your fish, I'm sure that will be a happy fish for the rest of its life now.

He/she eats pretty good Natalie. Since i've been taking care of the tank, I started feeding it beef heart every other day. It really likes it.

So after 3x a 50% water change the nitrates still read 80ppm? That's insane hahah.

About the 46 gallon, I had a huge 11 inch male, very thick, so I wouldn't advice it. Dempsey's really do get pretty big, it only takes them a lot of time.

I think the 46g should be fine for just the single dempsey for the rest of his/her life. If he/she's 9 years old then he/she's not going to get to over 10" for the rest his/her life. A little TLC and some peace should get him/her out of that stress funk in no time. Good luck!

Fantastic, just be sure to offer beefheart sparingly because it's not very nutritious. I'm sure that JD is in absolute heaven now that it has a good home. I'm glad you rescued it. :)

(Notice how I keep calling the JD "it"-- still can't figure out gender!!)
