just wondering if anyone could tell the sex of my jack dempsey. I am leaning towards male because of the elongated fins but i am really at a toss up. The fish is about four inches long so i think it is almost sexualy mature if i am not mistaken.

My guess would be female since there are quite a bit of spangles on the gill plate.

That is what most people have said is how to tell them apart. Lots of spangles and blue on the gill plate makes a female, less are male :)

But... I'm quite new at this so perhaps other people will be able to give you a more definite answer.

Agreed ;) Female ;)

With Dempseys it is 100 times more accurate to go with Gill plates and spangle position rather than fins ;)

But males can have some coloration on the face right?? Just to clarify... males have a few "dots" of colour on the face and females longer spangles.

Wow is that Yellow on her!! never seen one with Yellow where u get her from?

Definitely a female.
I have seen cases of females not having the spangles as well, but going by the spangles on the lower gill plate seems to be very accurate.
