just wondering if anyone could tell the sex of my jack dempsey. I am leaning towards male because of the elongated fins but i am really at a toss up. The fish is about four inches long so i think it is almost sexualy mature if i am not mistaken.

My guess would be female since there are quite a bit of spangles on the gill plate.
That is what most people have said is how to tell them apart. Lots of spangles and blue on the gill plate makes a female, less are male
But... I'm quite new at this so perhaps other people will be able to give you a more definite answer.

With Dempseys it is 100 times more accurate to go with Gill plates and spangle position rather than fins

But males can have some coloration on the face right?? Just to clarify... males have a few "dots" of colour on the face and females longer spangles.

I have seen cases of females not having the spangles as well, but going by the spangles on the lower gill plate seems to be very accurate.
