JD male or female

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im confident its a female with the additional pictures.

Look for a duller head with almost no blue spangles, more coloration and blue on the body and fins for a male.

Just added five more pics to my Gallery. And thanks for posting the pics im going to try and find a JD with blue spots not on the jaw i guess

Males have more spangling down the body, and both have red tipped dorsal fins. They also both will be pointed. Females will have color in their dorsal fin and around their faces.

It is a female - the reason you might be confused is because of its size. If it really is 8 inch its a great size for a female. Yours looks pretty much like my female on the left (photo below) though in that photo she is her breeding uniform.

Males generally are deeper bodied than females leading me to think yours is a female.

so im thinking of heading to the pet store tonight to get another JD a male but they are all no bigger then two inches anyone think the size will be a problem? and thanks for all the posts everyone appreciate the help.

Does your female jd have any other tankmates? You may have some agression issues if she has been alone in the tank for a long period of time. How big is the tank?

its a 65 and yeah she has had a pleco and a couple blue convicts over time she chases them sometimes when they are in there but never for a long distance and never bites

You may not have a problem adding a small male. Just keep an eye on them. Buy the dominate male in the fish store tank.:D

well just added a pic of my JD in my Gallery got the biggest one with blue spots on the body not around the mouth let me know if you think i made a mistake picking it. Thanks

That's about how my male looked when he was that size. The spangles go past the halfway point of the body.
