Ok, I know JD's are supposed to me nasty suckers but I think mine may be a softy!!

he is about 7" and seems to spend all his time hiding in the one spot and some anubis and does not seem to get much food. he is not coming out when i feed like the rest of the tank also seems very timid....

So is this normal?

Thanks,
Brett

Almost 12 months, he has always been timid but has got even more so latley

What is the water like? Perams. Check for damage. Are you sure it is a boy?

is it alone or are there tankmates? What size tank?

When my female acted that way I increased water changes and also switched from feeding 2-3 times a day to feeding 1-2 times per day.

Water is cleaner (less food) and she's out a lot more

Hungry fish are happy and active fish IME :D

oK forget that last post...I just read your sig in BIG BLACK LETTERS...sorry

With those 2 Oscars in there I think you're overstocked and your water quality is probably the problem....Unless you change water every other day

IMO 90 gallons is pushing it for just 2 Oscars, especially 13 inchers

All my paramiters are spot on I do 50% changes twice a week and i am over filtered.

He (really not sure if male or female) seems to have come back to eating but is still a little skitish.....

I had a JD and he was a huge puss. He always hid under and around stuff, and I ended up giving him to one of my friends because I really didn't care for him and he really wanted one that was that big (he was scared of my nicaraguense and my severums both inches smaller than him...)

My g/f has a JD in a 75 with a bunch of cichlids and he's also extremely passive and just sits under his rock all day long. He gets harassed by an oscar and a firemouth (both smaller than him), but hers is for sure a male, tons of pearls and a bright red stripe down the top of his fin.

I think JD's are much bigger wussies than people make them out to be, but if you really want it to eat, feed it some live earthworms or red wrigglers or nightcrawlers etc. Mine went absolutely insane for worms and would swim as fast as it could to get them before the other fish.

good luck

cichlids are like humans each one has different personalities. some are aggressive and some are timid. I also have jacks and they are a little aggresive but not super aggressive like that
