Will either a JD or Green Terror work in a 55? I have pool filter sand substrate, and run a Top Fin 60 and a Aquaclear 70 on the tank. It would be the only fish in the tank (unless I can get away with two).

Any input is appreciated.

I think you can get away with a pair of JD's in a 55 gallon....I would not get a GT, the males get real big, maybe 1 female would work. If I was you I would go with a JD pair, just my 2 cents.

I would not even put a female they get quite big as well....

It will be okay in a 55 for quite some time, but you will eventually have to upgrade. Go with the JD (single or pair) if you wanna house them in there for life.

I have a 55 gal. with an AquaClear 70 as well and a single female JD (for 2 months now). I have read many times that 55 gal. is the bare minimum for a single JD and 75 gal. the bare minimum for a couple JD.

I like GTs better then JDs, but I've seen a lot of 55 gallon tanks with both an the fish are fine. So it's really up to you.

It only being a 55 i would go with one jd. GT are cool (one of my favs) but there is a good chance you would have to upgrade. A gt gets just as wide if not wider then a 55 (12 inch)
A pair of jd would work for a little while, but eventually it would be crowed and an upgrade would be needed. If you plan on upgradeing the tank to at least a 75 then i would go with the GT!! :)

Something that I have always tried to follow is the length of the adult fish should only be about half of the width of the tank. At least with active fish like most cichlids. A GT can get 10-12" so that won't work. You could probably cheat with JD for a while because it isn't very active most of the time but still can get 8-10". I really wouldn't keep either one unless I have a 75 or better. Think, "Is this fish going to be happy for the next 12-15 years in this tank?" Because most people have plans of upgrading but usually never do.
