Well, I went against my original train of thought and went out and got a female JD to go with Bruiser. She is about 3.5 inches long and had good gill plate coloring and seemed to be the healthiest of the bunch in her tank. Bruiser chased her for about 30 minutes, until she stuck up for herself, and now they won't get more than 6 inches away from eachother. I must say that Bruiser's coloration is amazing now. He went from being a good looking fish with good color to a great looking fish with amazing coloring. His stripes have all popped out and the female (yet to be named) is also showing amazing color as compared to her pet store colors. I'm sure i'll have no problem taking the fry to the LFS should the pair result in wrigglers. Just wanted to give everyone an update.

awesome, haha hopefully he will stay nice for her.

Yeh, i've got my fingers crossed. The male went from hiding for the better part of the day to being much more active. He's also now trying to keep the pleco away from the pit he's dug and both JDs are doing what my wife calls a "happy dance." I'm just excited that it's gone well so far. I know that when trying to impress a female that the male's coloring improves, but the change was really amazing.

Good luck with the pair. As long as she has somewhere to hide that he can't get into should he decide to get too rough everything should be ok.

Awesome advise. You should get a flower pot that only she can fit into, or take some slate and make a cave just her size. I had to do this with my herotilapia multisinosa. My male constantly wants to breed, and when the female isn't producing eggs he becomes a bully. So I built a little cave in the corner of their tank and when he starts acting like a jerk so goes and hides in her cave.

Already done that, there are two rock caves that are small enough only she can get in there. Also, the driftwood is a large piece that she is about to swim all around to lose him. I'd thought of making some caves and covering them with rocks so they blend in a little better than the usual flowerpot.

Well, the pair laid eggs today. I guess I have about 36 hours to see if i have wrigglers. Pretty excited. I got the female 4 days ago. I'll try to post some pics tonight or tomorrow of the pair and their spawning rock.
