Can I grow out a JD in my 75 gallon planted comunity tank? At least big enough my 12 inch oscar can't eat it? Or would it make a mess of the tank and kill all the fish before it was big enough to move?
I am pretty sure I know the answer but had to ask anyways.

JDs behavior always depends on the tankmates it has. Alone they may be docile or D-heads.....as a "Commensal" they tend to be a little more shy and retreating, but as a tank boss they become brutish tyrants, especially w/ females present. As far as digging up plants, I have heard they will, but I have owned over 15 JDs in my life and none ever bothered my plants. As far as a 75g, YES I think it will be more thaan adequate for a JD or even more, my only question is what will it be kept with until he's moved to the Oscar tank?

I agree, tank mates the un-known to answer the question fully.

I have upside down cats, cory cats, bn pleco, common pleco (well move when big enough) angelfish, rainbow fish, phantom tetra's the only ones he would be able to eat are the red fin tetras. And a jungle of plants. By the time he could eat them would he be big enough to move?
The JD's are only a 2.3 inches long at the pet shop. Never see any big ones.

U know they grow 10", right?

Honestly? No...

Catfish are in his territory range, near the bottom. The will be bullied im sure when he settles in. Might live, but will probably be whipped a few times. Angels have long fins that can be torn and infected. Tetras are fast but easily eaten. A JD can move ip the food chain quick and when in charge the kick major donkeybutt. And noting in that tank can challenge or defend itself against a strong, tough, big-mouthed JD.

Its named after a badass fighter boxer dude (boxer i think right?) which should tell you something

I would go straight in with the Oscar. Give it some places to hide and it should be smart enough to survive.

I think he's got a much better chance w/a JD than an Oscar, plus easy to find mates for JD, but not Oscars. If anything is ok w/ cichlids in that tank, the catfish/plecos the only thing safe, IMO. I got all those species w/ JDs right now and they don't bother 'em at all. Tetras MIGHT be ok, Rainbows should be....common dither for cichlid tanks, Angels will be the 1st thing to get killed unless they are one of those psychopath DarkAngelfish that duanes duanes posted recently that will attack anything
