New to the hobby, just picked up a 30g tall and a 55 gallon that is being set up (hopefully good to go within ~a month). Im using the 30 as a bit of a grow out while the 55 is still being set up. At the moment I have ~4 inch JD and a smaller pleco that the jd has been with the entirety of its time in the tank (they get along no problems). Wanted to get another cichlid that would either take the journey into the 55 with the JD once I transfer him , or stay in my 30. I was thinking a green terror or jag or oscar (although id like to avoid the mess from what i hear lol, love thier look tho) but i really am open to suggestions since this JD is my first cichlid, and dont have a vast array of knowledge of different types of SA cichlids. I was also contemplating using dither fish but not sure if that even help or would over crowd my little 30 for the time being. thanks for any suggestions!

if your JD is a male it is going to need that whole 55g to itself (the pleco would be fine in with him) is it a bristlenose pleco or a common one? commons get entirely too big and if you can still return it i would and get a bristlenose unless you plan on getting a much larger tank in the future, ideally even a JD should be kept in at least a 75g but it should be good in the 55g for awhile (since if its a male it can get to a foot, which is how wide a 55g is) Welcome to the world of Ca cichlids, these guys are great but unfortunately take a lot of tank space and even more in order to house them together

and i would actually prefer a nice male GT to a JD and GTs tend to be more outgoing than JDs, GT also dont get as large and would be good in the 55g for life comfortably, a jag or O is a def no if you aren't going to go larger than a 55g

i believe a common, bought it a decent while ago at petco i doubt they would take it back but perhaps my local fish store will?.. sort of a regretful buy at this time but at the time i didnt really have any plans for my tank, and i didnt know that they grow so large lol

i would return the pleco as said above^ and keep the jack dempsey and, get 3-4 silver dollars and get 1-2 synodontis sp.

Actually gt's get larger than jd's... A mature male gt will be 10-12" while a jd will barely be pushing 10" I havent seen too many jd's over 10".. there is a member on her with a 14"+ gt.... A jd will be good in a 55 for a while a gt will need a 75 .....

I agree..a JD is much better suited for a 55g then a GT.

+1

A JD can be a very beautiful fish as well. They just take a big longer to get there in my experience.
