In a 40 breeder, stick to just 1 larger cichlid (JD or similar) or 2 Convicts would do well. To mix the two would be almost certain death as well as a hightened polution rate as the Cons start breeding, and breeding, and breeding....
It's pretty cruel to mix almost any fish with a breeding pair of any fish similar to convicts. Ever seen the show "COPS" when the cops come to a white trash females house when she's got her kids and abusive, dead-beat boyfriennd around?
Just don't do it! Take care of the fish and give them some room to have a buffer and they will raise more young. At any rate they will remain happy and healthier than if stuffed in a tight glass box.
