its .30-06. i just wanna a clean and simple deer/pig gun, nothing fancy thats why i dont need a crazy sniper stock. i might even do some sort of splatter or camo paint job on the factory stock if i get boredJD7.62;2612765;2612765 said:What caliber is it again and what is your ultimate goal for the rifle?
Haha not really a fun switch, I dont have the $20,000+ for that. It was built to as closely replicate a mid to late 90's Russian AKS-74. Ive always wanted an AK-74 type rifle, especially an early model repro with the beautiful laminate stocks but the availability and price of 5.45x39mm had always kept me away from them. Now that the price of that ammo is dirt cheap ($40 for 300 rounds at Sportsmens Guide!!) I figure what the heck. Its not the early model repro I was looking for but still a great rifle.
It was built on a VIRGIN Bulgarian AKS-74 kit by Wellco Arms. The receiver is an Armory USA 1.6mm receiver. Armory USA makes pretty good receivers. The standard AKM receiver is 1.1mm and therefore not as strong as the 1.6mm, but being a fanatic for repros I am kind of disappointed in that. Its still a fantastic rifle with a good bit of collectibility to it but I will shoot the snot out of it given todays ammo prices. I figure I will pick up a least 600 rounds a month until the supply is depleted or goes up.
Here is a link to the builder's web site, he makes some really amazing stuff!

That site is HUGE!
Go to Equipment Exchange and then go to the AK mags/parts FS forum.
The only problem is reading a thread in the lounge and by the time you are done the therad is on page three!
