Mine started coloring up nicely around 3+ inches.

I agree that they look better over darker gravel. Light colored gravel definitely washes them out.

yeah mine started to show nicely around 3 inches. i think its mainly how comfortable it is in its environment.(that includes proper feeding)

sadly i gave all mine away and only have one female JD left. cool fins tho =)

Can someone tell me what you guys feed you JD's to bring out their colors ive been feeding mine Tetra Color Tropical Ganules. I gave some bloodworms as a treat yesteryday and he ate the most out of the fish.

I feed Hikari Gold pellets as a staple. When my JD was small I fed him Hikari Gold as a staple, with frozen bloodworms or frozen brine shrimp every 3 feedings. Now that he is bigger he gets Hikari Gold, earthworms, krill, bait shrimp, and the ocassional june-bug, grasshopper, or horsefly that I happen across.

Mine loves it, he will literally come out of the water to eat it. Many MFKers feed market shrimp or bait shrimp because it is a heavy protein that is loaded with carotenes.

mine is about seven inches and still looks horrible! it looked practically brown at the store and coloured up at home but it just looks so horrible even on a diet of biogold
