I got a JD for my dorm room just for fun. He started in a 10g at 2", went to a 20g at 3", and is now at 4" and growing quick. He's a petsmart fish so he aint nothin special but he's still really pretty for PMs standards even though he is a little pale. Anyway to get to the point. I am about to move him again into a 29g and was really wanting to get a female to try and spawn them. I know a 29g is small for JDs but I wasn't sure if it was still doable at least for a while?
Jacks are great fish and even though they are a beginner fish in many ways I still have a bit of a soft spot for them, (no homo). They were the first fish I had and I'm really wanting to give them another try but don't want to do something that would hurt the fish in any way.

Thanks for any impute/comments,
-Christian

u would need a bigger tank for a pair...

I wouldn't do it. At 4" my JD was already taking over a 55g. In a tank that small I think the male would very easily harass and most likely kill the female. You might be able to get away w/ a breeding pair in a 55g but I would think a 75g would be more appropriate once they are full grown.

Would He be Ok to remain in a 29g until may 1st? I don't really have anything bigger at the moment and I don't think I will be able to get anything bigger until then... :/

Just wait until you can get a larger tank. JDs are common enough for you to find a female down the line that will be close to the male's size at that time. And don't feel like your fish is less important just because it comes from Petsmart. A person can get a wild-caught cichlid from a top-notch breeder and still end up with a shabby fish if he doesn't take proper care of it.

Alone or w/ a female?

With a female....definatley not IMO.
Alone....I'm not sure. That's still 4.5 months away & he's already at 4 inches. He's not gonna grow at the same rate he has been obviously, I'd got out on a limb & say he'd be ok by himself in a 29 for another 4 months.

jus keep the water clean and he'll be fine its not like hes gonna hi a foot by may tanks good enough for awhile

Unlike many others you have upgraded and continue to, which is good, often when people post questions about an eventual 10 inch fish in a small tank the face palming begins, but I think you will actually upgrade so props.

As far as 3.5 months in a 29 gallon alone it's pushing it, but if you keep the water changed out enough it is possible, as far as a male and female, I wouldn't try. If the male likes what he says he'll probably harass her to death, and if he has no interest in her for a mate she'll have nowhere to run to.

Breeding JD's in a 55 gallon is very common and works quite well, I've bred them in 55's often without problems, of course the bigger the tank the easier it will be.

Ok, so I am really...REALLY happy with the feed back I have gotten, you guys have been really helpful. I have found a 55g and am planning on going to check it out tomorrow, so depending on how that pans out I may try to grow out a female for the summer.
I like growing out my own fish so that I can make sure they start out healthy and stay that way, (plus I like the sense of satisfaction I get from a well raised fish, haha).
Anyway I got a tank lined up, and school lets out on the 1st of may so yea 3.5 months and he'll be chillin in a bran new 55g.

I got mine to breed in a 29 not recomended as soon as the fry hit a 1/4" he started eating them and of corse this didn't go over well with the female. I lost her and all the fry. I kept a female alone in a 29 for 5 months she did ok I wuldnt say well tho.
