Jersey Trip anyone ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes --NY does not have many places left. Monsters in flushing is good. There is no parking. Have to pay in a lot. Its kind of cramped. Hard to move around. Not a place where you can hang out and relax. In Jersey there is Fish Hut Pretty good. Its bigger on the inside then it looks form the outside. There is Absolutely Fish -nice store , a bit expensive, half is salt water. They are Better for Salt Water. Then there is Bimetal's Exotic in Pearl River - huge store never know what they may have. In long Island there is not much left. Two or three places with mostly small fish. Impossible to find a 4 inch clown loach out there. I would love to go to PA and check out these stores you mentioned. Maybe we can plan a PA trip and hit these stores. Its pretty exciting to go to a place where you never been. I would say four in a car would be great to share expenses and talk fish while traveling. If I missed any places I would like to hear about them. Keep fishing ---

Global in elmwood Park. Aquascape in Belleville. Exotic aquatics out in Washington. We still have a few good shops. The old hole in the wall Elys in Morristown area All well worth visiting
I've long been wanting to visit all those shops as well as Monster up in New York......and speaking of NY I'll go out on a limb and state that there really are no shops left in my state of Pennsylvania that are worth travelling all the way from New York to visit. There are a few good shops left here but there are plenty that are far better in New Jersey alone.

Compare with the PA stores I mentioned and House of Tropical in Md, the Jersey stores are dwarf.

The big PA stores are all in the outskirt of Philly spread out far apart, not a nearby tour. There are no stores left, if any, in Philly I am aware of.

Baltimore outskirt has two big stores with big fish, House of Tropical in Glenn Bernie and Lucky Aquarium in Rosedale, 20 min apart so it's a nearby tour.

In my my opinion the physical size of a store is of little importance....especially if they do not keep a good and varied selection of stock.I cannot speak on any of the Maryland shops but the big stores in PA seem to have gone the wannabe PetSmart route. There used to be a time I didnt mind driving damned near two hours to Lancaster to ThatPetPlace.....massive store and equally massive fishroom with the selection that such a space warrants but they've gone down the past few years selectionwise so I no longer bother to make the drive.
The Hidden Reef is now in a huge stand alone building with an equally large fish room for salt and freshwater but their selection was much better when they were in a smaller space in Philly.

Philly's heyday of shops are long gone.Besides Petsmarts all over the place the only shops within the city are MonsterPets and Worldwide Aquarium.

MonsterPet in Audubon, SNJ has just closed shop, not sure if the one in South Philly is still open. The fish rooms in both places are so small to worth visiting anyway. Worldwide in NorthEast Philly used to be big, but it has closed shop for many years. Is Worldwide in Ridge Ave still open? I’ve been there a couple times and it’s small.

I've never been to the Monster in Audubon, the one in West Philly closed down but South Philly is still open.Last time I was there most of the tanks were filthy.I loved the Worldwide that was in Upper Darby. They had the best selection of African cichlids but they closed before the one in NE Philly shut down. The last remaining one up on Ridge Ave is still open.
