I was at the local petsmart and seen a cichlid called the jewel cichlid. It was like 3 or 4 bucks and would look great in my 55 gallon. I would like to know every little bit of info I can. Anyone out there no anything? Thanks

They are mean suckers. They wiped out one of my tanks filled with SA/CA. I would suggest staying away from them. Unless you want a tank of one fish small at that. They will also kill off their mate at times too.
depending on what kind of jewel aka hemichromis you get, they can ruin your set up, but some can get along very weel with others, however, the ones from the lfs, usually r among the more aggressive of types, so make sure if you by those the other fish r twice the size of the jewel, and they do prefer soft water, there color will be much, better in a soft water aquarium.
your in philly? i cant have anything shipped or cant buy any expensive fish. i dont have the money right now.

do you think my jewel will ever stop lip locking with a salvini in a 42g planted tank? this tank is a 42g corner tank, with rock work and alot of plants, and a 4" firemouth, 2.4" salvini, 3" jewel, and 3" bristlenose plec. it had a little battle with the firemouth one day, but the firemoth showned the jewel that that is his rock, but for going on three days now the jewel just keeps liplocking with my salvini, the jewel overpowers the salvini, but it always comes back just to start ****, they arnt actually damaging each other, they just like to lock up and start trying to push... should i try to seperate?
