Thanks. 3 or 4 firemouth too much for a 50L? Plus a school of swordtail? Maybe a handful of synodontis petricolas too?

Yes a group of 4 Firemouth. Don't have any experience with the Synodontis Petricolas so hopefully someone will chime in with info.

Never kept a Synodontis Petricolas so I don’t know about them but I’m a fan of Pictus Catfish. Really active and noticeable guys

50 long is 4' long? yeah 4 firemuoths should be fine with some swordstails. The firemouths will eat the fry. And you could probably add a few petricola. Bio-load will be heavy but manageable when fish are all large, weekly WC's will keep nitrates in check. I would only do 4 swords (1 male 3 female) and like 2-3 cats.

Great, thanks for the advice! Would I have to remove the cats to double the swordtails? Or only 4 regardless? Gourami Swami Gourami Swami If so, would a few Pictus cats work instead of petricolas?

pictus would work fine in place of the petricolas. As far as the numbers go, there are no hard set rules to this stuff, I'm just giving what I think would be a good numbers to keep bio-load at a manageable level. You could try a few more, just keep in mind that the more fish you add the more water changes you will likely have to do once fish are adults. And with the swords, the only thing I would recommend is to only get one male, and a bunch of females. The males are pretty dang territorial to each other. It's possible that if you did like 5 males the aggression would be dispersed enough between all of them, but if you did like 2 or 3 males, chances are the dominant one will slowly bully the others to death. Have had that happen to me a few times now, always seem to end up with one male sword in the tank.

cool glad to help. sounds like it will be a nice tank. Post pics when done !
Still have to get my wife on board first! I had 6 tanks going at once a few years back and broke them all down after having a baby and getting burned out. Ready to get back in, doing all the planning, but getting a “hard no” right now, lol. Will get there eventually, but this is the setup I will go with.

that sounds like a project in itself! Do some extra dishes, maybe clean the house while she is out at pilates or something.... then tell her it's a two part surprise, and there is also a tank in the living room haha
