I have this great orangish jewel fish and I was wondering how he would do in an African tank... Call me silly I know a lot about lake africans and nothing about river... should he join my others or stay in my river sa/ca tank?

a little help please...

ps... he is kicking the crap out of my lil convicts... I got them as fry so... not huge, still wonder:screwy:

Well I had a Jewel with my haps/peacocks for a while he never did anything bad, but they have been known to be mean, especially if you have a pair. Anyways I now have 2 in my mbuna tank, and 1 might have killed off a little albino zebra, but I don't know if the fish died from anything else first. Also he tried to take over the tank, but was quickly put into his place by the alpha male. Anyways as always it all depends on how your fish act. Though I must say that an orange jewel fish sounds odd...

(And yah so basically I would suggest that 1 single male in a mbuna tank should be no real problem assuming the fish are about the same size, and the jewel will be always be able to hold his own, but for hap/peacocks I really don't suggest it.)

West African rivers have water par. closer to that of SA rivers/lakes(softer water), than the east African lakes.

from the last post I take it you say keep with my SA? My african tanks are either a baby tank or my show tank with my peacocks... so I am guessing SA... I know his color is odd. I thought he would turn a red color, but he is still a little small maybe he will red up some more

:nilly:

There are a few oddball jewels from Africa. I recently picked up some Hemichromis guttatus. Although I think alot of H. guttatus get misidentified as H. bimaculatus.

You could, but it would only make a difference if you have softer water in your SA tank. Really they could do good in all kinds of water par.

As softturtle said, Jewels are fine in almost all water. It is really more their temperament that you have to worry about.

I know fish are like people some like everyone others are just pure punks... but overall can river go with lake... I know that you do not want to put shell dwellers with others so are river the same?

I honestly don't know. All I know is that out of the 3 jewel fish I have had 1 is a mean little buger and I only feel comfortable having him with mbuna type rift lake fish. And I would never ever want a mating pair with really any other fish.
