You have to remember, fish have different personalities. One jewel cichlid might pick on everything else you try to keep it with. Another one might be very timid, and get ripped to shreds by Mbunas. It all depends on the individual fish. In theory, it's not a good combination because Jewel cichlids are bigger, slow moving, while Mbunas are fast, darting, streamlined fish.
yes they are slower moving but they can take a lot more abuse, my male jewel is half the size of my ice blue male (king, huge) yet the ice blue wont fight him, when they run in to each other they display then move away from each other, all my fish grew up together and know exactly how tuff the jewels are
