I dont think he was on drugs.
Some people just cant handle fame. He's been out of the spotlight for a while. And I think that's why. You can see he has long hair, a beard and sunglasses. That's sorta an unconscious way of hiding in a sense. You can also tell he's pretty nervous in the interview. Some people just cant take being a celebrity. He's caved in on himself. Thats all.

OK I just watched it.. I think hes totally acting.. like.. come on! How did he not understand what everyone was laughing about? And then right at the end he takes off his glasses to talk to Letterman.. its a publicity stunt. Ugh.. Stupid Joaquin..

I think the smirk at the end after Dave said "Joaquin, sorry you couldn't be here tonight" gives it away as a prank. Alot of articles I've read this morning think it's part of a stunt tied into his new music career. He acted like he knew what he was doing IMO.
