Normally, I would do a lot of searching first, but one of my LFS is closing down tomorrow and they have a 12" johanna, so I need an answer as quickly as possible. I've been wanting a pike, but haven't had time to do a lot of searching yet. I have a 7x2x2 w/ a 5" frontosa, 6" AT datnoid, 7" NTT datnoid, 11" lapradei, 11" ornate, 11" BGK, 11" lima shovelnose, 7" jag, 8" texas. None of my fish are agressive, surprisingly enough for a male jag. My main worry is it will, at least eventually, try to eat the frontosa as it's not too large and they are slow growers. I've heard that johanna get 14 inches and I've also heard 18. Which one is true and what do you think of putting it in there?

I have a little more time to figure this out, so I'm going to do a little searching. I do need to pick this fish up later today, though, if I'm going to get it.

I read in one thread that johanna get 14 inches and they are a "good" "beginner" pike. I got the 18 by mistake as I asked about marmarota for some reason instead of johanna :screwy:. I imagine since it's already 12 inches that it will take a while to get to 14 and shouldn't be able to eat my front, but I really don't have experience, so I don't know for sure if it will or not. That is my biggest question.

My fish eat a nice variety, like beefheart, FD krill, market shrimp, tilapia, cichlid bio-gold, omega one shrimp pellets, etc., so the pike should find something it likes in there.

My pikes have only been aggressive towards each other. For the most part only the cr. sveni and the cr. sp. "belly crawler" go at it. My cr. johanna just ignores them both and is easily twice the size of the other two. I really don't think, especially if you keep it well fed, that you'll have any problems with a cr. johanna trying to eat it's tankmates. Of course if they are smaller than 2", you may have a problem.

ok, cool, thanks. I won't mind removing the texas at all and the jag too much, so I should be good there. He also has a nice 8" red tiger mota that's in the tank w/ the johanna that I would love to get, too, but I don't want too many cichlids in there because the other fish will have a hard time getting food.

Grab it up!!! Your going to have to start thinking about overcrowding though. Don't forget to post pictures!
Ya, it will eventually be overcrowded, but I am planning on at least a 96x30 w/i 6 months. Right now, all the fish usually hang out together, which is weird. And, like I said before, the jag and texas can be removed fairly easily if need be.

I know which pike you are talking about. That will be a sweet pickup!

At 5 inches, your Front should be big enough, but I don't think there's any guarantee. Remember when my Ven ate my new cat? I thought the cat would be big enough, but the Ven quickly proved me wrong. I keep the Ven VERY well fed, and he still went right after the cat.

My Ven is not aggressive towards any of the other fish in the tank. He gets along pretty well with all my other cichlids. My Argentea goes after him at feeding time because he steals all the food, but that's about it.

I say get the pike!

well, I went there to pick it up and it was sold :irked: He also sold the motag. I picked up a 5-6" lepidota, for $25 (Mike is closing the store this week and is in the process of moving all the fish). I hope it works out okay, but I may have to trade or sell it when it gets bigger from what I've read about them. It's acclimating right now, so I'll get some pix as soon as I can.
