thanks! I think after reading that, i would say i own a maingano. My "maingano" has a slimmer body. kinda skinny, which makes me believe he is as stated.. certainly not much difference..
not much difference... woooow..

nope. i took good pics and people couldn't really give me a definate ID. a couple people leaned toward maingano though, so i suppose i need to get some maingano females now. I was tricked at the lfs and bought red zebras instead of female johanni (check the images, so similar!). so anyways, i won't go back to that lfs since i just started with cichlids this week and i know as much as the person at the lfs selling them. Their water was at 6.0 at the lfs!!!!! i tested the water and acclimated the new arrivals to their 7.6 tank

many LFS do not know african mbuna cichlids at all... there are so many species.. the babies look nothing like they will look as adults.. the males are completely different then the females in most cases.. and the LFS unless they specialize get mixed africans from the wholesaler.. and then of course they hire people that don't know... so if your a serious breeder or hobbiest that wants pure africans etc.. you must deal with a honorable reputable african breeder.. don't get me wrong.. there are alot of great LFS out there you just have to find them... so the very best detective.. is you... know what the fish looks like.. tell them to order you some... or buy direct ... you should post up more pics of yours in this thread.. i have had to post up the same fish many times.. until someone can make a positive ID..no shame in that... some like these two ..are very tricky.... :D

i totally agree with you red!!!!! my friend worked in a lfs for 8 years and told me he found a frontosa in a shipment of feeders ! its scary to know how little people in the industry know sometimes and what goes on and such
