I got him as a probed probable male, currently 8 months old.

I even got the very egg that he hatched out of. Very exciting.

So far very calm, and not flighty, much more docile than I'd expect from any juvenile iguana. Allows me to gently rub him and has eaten a few pieces of greens I hand to him.

Hopefully it'll do well and I can post regular updates on its development, especially since there are no extensive discussions on this particular species.

I currently keep him in a relatively roomy enclosure, 4x3x1.5 custom with front panel opening. I use T-Rex flood lamp (mercury vapor) in the morning and a ceramic heat bulb at night, and Bounty paper towels as susbtrate. Other than the pieces of wood that I stole from my fish tank, I only have a big water bowl in there (it's actually a big water dish sold for large dogs) along with a small food dish.

I bought batches of chard, collard green and kale... along with carrots and bananas to start off the diet. I also have big jugs of reptile vitamins and calcium with D3.

I do have one concern, and that is, the little guy was basking ALL DAY right beneath the flood lamp today, and the enclosure reads just above 80F (maybe 82F)... is this hot enough for him? The lamp is 100 watts and about 15" off the cage floor... I'm not sure what the basking spot temperature is but I'm sure it's at least 10 or 15 degrees higher than the rest. Should I upgrade to a higher wattage? The problem is, I already stocked quite a few 100 watt flood bulbs and they're pretty expensive (about $50 a piece)!

i have a rhino igg as well and he stays under his light for most of the day. its just what they do for the most part. i would get an accurate reading of his basking spot ASAP. i keep mine at around 105-110 and that seems to work the best.
go to home depot and buy some outdoor flood light bulbs, the ones you see if peoples fixtures above the garage and such. they are cheap 8 bux a peice i think. thats what i use and they work great. im only using a 50 or 70 watt on his cage. and switch to a regular tube UVB. they work better.

its good to hear that your is rather calm. he may get flighty though. from what i am told is that they tend to calm down after there first year.

where did you get him from?

The custom cage doesn't have any fluorescent fitting, so I'm forced to buy the mercury vapor lamp for both heat and UVB.

I'm relieve to know that yours bask all day long too.... I just thought they bask and once warm enough they go off to do something else lol guess not.

My cat freaked him out today so he's a little tense but still very calm otherwise. Funny thing is my cat simply sat there and did absolutely nothing. I suppose it's just a natural response.

It'll sure be interesting when my bird gets here hopefully next week... :D

Oh, I got the Rhino Iguana from David Blair.

what kind of bird are you getting?

I'm getting a baby African Grey. It was supposed to come this week, but the breeder said the baby lost some weight during the weaning process and she wants to add some weight to the bird before sending it my way.

I also tried to handle the Rhino just now and it wasn't very pleasant lol. I take all that back, it was very defensive - hissing, whipping and it even got hold of my thumb in it's mouth. Almost pissed on my hand as well, it'll need some considerable work.

I did notice that all the nails have previously been trimmed, which means it must have been in some way handle in the past. It's still very calm, until I try to hold him.

Hopefully that'll change as I continue to tame the beast!
