I quite like the pattern. Like many have said, needs to bulk up and of course grow out. Why the concern on the ornates? At the size yours is I doubt you could make to fat as you say, rather the growth should accelerate. Great fish

Looks good, when you are dealing with polypterus, there isn't anything that is "too fat" in my opinion. I have never seen a polypterus eat until it dies, except for choking on something of course. Mine always stop when they are full, so don't worry about feeding too much. Just do water changes according to how much you feed.
