i had put up a thread to help id these fish when LUPIN nailed it. julidochromis marlieri. thanks lupin. are these an inexpensive fish. a few weeks ago i noticed a very small one. what breeding guidelines do ya all recommend.
Julies are awesome! They're not the most expensive fish out there normally about 15-20 bucks in your LFS. I've never bred them, but they are pair forming and the male will choose a dark cave to spawn in. Once you see the pair break off you should get rid of any extras you have to avoid aggression.
I have a marlieri too. Some fish stores who know what they are price them around 15-20 bucks as Qwesty said. But I got mine for $6.99. The fish store cant identify it, but they knew it was tanganyikan. It was the same fish store that sell peacocks for $6.99. You just have to shop around to get the best value. I also read somewhere that when breeding them, the pairs stay together for a long time.
I have 3 breeding pairs of J. Marileri Gombe. It can sometimes be difficult to get a pair out of them but once they do pair off they breed continuously. Only time problems arise is when you change their setting so if they've claimed a territory dont change the area's decorations or you may disorient them and lose the pair.
Mine breed like crazy. I have about 80 offspring of various sizes. The pair was moved into a new setup and are starting to get to know each other again. They are super good at protect fry. I had mine with 8 comps/calvus and the lost little to No fry. They also can protect against 10inch fronts with out a problem. So enjoy them...
