Don't adult pacu eat nuts in real life? I thought falling tree nuts and figs were staples for them (what the birds knock off the trees) why not try to replicate that? After all, that pad behind their front upper teeth is for cracking nut shells.

Yeah in the wild their diet is mainly nuts, seeds, and veggies with the occasional smaller fish. I think I heard somewhere that Brazil nuts are the common nuts that they eat.

So why not let your adult pacu stretch those jaws? There's a reason they were given the bite force of a cayman. Pieces of cucumber and pellets have to be depressing for them lol.

My fish are pigs/gluttons--they will eat anything/everything. They inhaled almonds without even chewing. I stopped giving them almonds for fear that even if the almonds didn't foul up their plumbing, the tank plumbing might get jammed. :) :) They can swallow grapes whole, too. They have voracious appetites. I guess it's a water quality issue. It is much easier to maintain good water parameters when our fish eat pellets then when they eat fruit and veggies. And I don't have to worry about whether they are getting adequate nutrition.

How big are yours? I got mine at the size of a quarter about 22 days ago and now he is about 4.5 inches. They grow so fast when given the proper care, it's crazy!

Cool idea. Have you tried larger NLS? They have a 10mm I believe.

I bought 10 pounds of "large fish" NLS. Got to use it up. I measure in millimeter increments every day at work, but was so desperate to solve my pellets in the overflow box problem, that I was blinded by the words "sinking" and "large" and failed to the notice 3mm size. I was shocked when I opened the first 5 lb container and saw how small the pellets were. It's going to be a long long time before the NLS gets used up. I bought more agar agar today from our local health food store. Wish there was an asian market around here--would have been cheaper. That's the down side of living in the boonies.

Been there. Done that. I've come to the conclusion that feeding them other things is 100% for my entertainment. It just raises the nitrates higher than they need to be. For me, it's not worth doing extra water changes. I'm entertained enough just watching them watching me. Contrary to fish who people think have personality because they do the "feed me" dance when you approach their tank, my fish are extremely interactive at all times. They like to be pet and push each other out of the way to be petted, they are very curious about what goes on outside of their tank---they really watch us and want to check out our cat when we hold her up to their tank. They are not deprived or depressed in any way. I am committed to providing them the best home that I can give them, and I believe that maintaining excellent water parameters is crucial if they are going to be long-lived fish. Keep in mind that pacu are omnivores, not vegetarians as a lot of people think. They are opportunistic eaters. IMO omnivore fish food is perfect for my fish.

Yeah, I put shrimp in for my other fish and my Pacu eats a lot of it. Also beef heart, blood worms, and shrimp pellets. It gets really annoying because ill put in 15 shrimp pellets for my Bichir and the Pacu will eat them all before the Bichir gets to them.

My only concern, PacuMom, ( and i fully agree that when on pellets nothing else is necessary and is solelly for our enjoyment ) is whether by cooking the pellets uou are not taking nutrients and other valuable stuff out of them....
