This is a do-able thing.

Netting would have to be small, with rip-stop qualities.

The need to be cut/formed/molded by the purchaser is necessary, without deformation or sagging, every install is custom.

Possibly cutting and then melting the edge or using a hot knife. Poisonous off-gassing is a concern...

A frame simular to what are on most tanks could be used (possibly made in sections for shipping purposes), or snap on clips to secure it all around.

Mold from constant moisture & air need to be addressed also.

This could also be used as a temporary "safety net' (sorry) for when your working with the tank, attached by suction cups and elastic cords. I know I've chased many fish into a frenzy.

Is this the kinda stuff you wanted? :D

Keep us posted,
Dr Joe

Yes Thank You...

My Idea was to make sizes available that are able to cover different tanks.
Cut to size if you will.
The same net can be stretched wider that fits a longer tank, just by the nature of the mesh...
Elastic laced clips that secure it to the top.
Suction cups are a great idea, too.
Another way would be to open the center meshes, by cutting them, say where your access needs to be, then when you want to secure the netting you just lace it up like a shoe. This would draw it snug against the clips holding the mesh in place...

The new nets material is an Aramid fiber like "SPECTRA" that doesn't mildew, is designed to be stong when wet, as well as UV resistant.
Not too far from the superlines that are used to "Rod and Reel" fish.

Mesh sizes can be had from .50"-5" and larger...It is a very pliable soft lay netting.

I would guess 1" mesh and clips that attached to the edge of the tank as well as suction cups, along with some elastic cord for lacing might just be the ticket...

I'm thinking something starting at the 55g size would be small enough (48" x 12")

Here is a pic of the mesh at 1" size...

I'd stay with the .5" and allow for stretch, smaller holes don't matter and then 'one size fits all'.

You'll have to get some and check for sag when wet, but it's looking good.

What part of the 'fishing industry' are you in?,,,and is a fish feeder like a dog petter? :D

The streching part of the netting has to do with the deforming of the shape of the web rather than the actual fibers elongating...I.E. square vs diamond shaped web.
SPECTRA fiber actually has an extremely low ammount of strech.

Doc,
I am a commercial Dungeness Crab fisherman.
I also used to do Salmon Seining in S.E. Alaska in the summers, till the price dropped out.

Dungeness crab are only harvested in a Federally regulated season, Adult Males only taken, Females and Juvenilles safely returned to the ocean at time of catch.
This provides for the preservation of the species...

I just hate the fisheries that rape the ocean.:irked:

Here is my idea for some simple clips...

I ubderstans about the netting stretch.

I agree with your thinking about our oceans.

How about facing the hooks on the clips up and pulling (stretching) the netting and hooking it directly on the clip, no cord in most cases.

Use 3M double faced foam tape(waterproof) to hold clips on?

Well that's it for me tonight, actually 2:16am Sunday here already.

Later.

i see it as useless. fish keeping isn't rocket science. learn from ur mistakes or others mistakes and there should be no need for this "jump-proof netting" which is why it was never put into production in fish keeping in the first place. get a proper lid, cover ur tank, and be done with it.

but if u wanna be different, use pvc piping and create a frame with hinges and zip tie some netting to that if u need a net to keep ur fish alive...

can you imagine how ugly a net would be over ur fish tank LOL

i agree

i just have big flat rock over both of my lids

as for those filter slots that are in toward the back of the tank i have two custom acrylic covers that fit right into them, i strap them down down wit duct tape and whala! tight, secure and out of sight. as for those tiny circle wholes.........she cant fit through those :grinno: :WHOA:

pics of my acyrlic slot covers tommorow when i go over there.

at a wildlife center where i use to work

we did this to all the shark, big fish bins, and ray tanks

the netting was black fishing net, very durable material, one theyve had for several years and its still in mint shape.

Ahhh Yeah...
That's precicly my point...an alternitive to that kinda thing... Big Rocks and duct tape.

Tell me, what do you do with those big rocks when doing maintenance?

I found the aluminum perfect for the clips. It is the same kind used in those finger splints that the Docs' office. Easy to bend into shape but will be strong enough, if bent to a 90 degree angle.
To keep them from scratching the tank, I will dip them in this product...
