so cal
I'm pretty bummed out. I found my 2 endilis on the floor tonight. They have only been in the tank for a few days. What did i do wrong? Tank is 175g 0 ammonia 0 nitrite not sure of nitrate but I do weekly 25% water changes, Ph is 8.3 and LFS said my alkaline was high(he asked if i had Africans)

My friend it has nothing to do with your parameters. Bichirs are known to be jumpers, and you have to make sure every gap of your tank is covered and weighed down. They are also very curious, so keep any tubing they might be able to fit in covered. Sorry for you loss though.

He's right. :)

Alright guys that has to be it then. I defiantly had gaps in the back of my tank where my filters used to be. What a drag. I wish I'd have known they would find em. I'm going to fix those gaps before I add anything else to the tank. Thanks for the quick responses.

well.... we do have a ton of stickies here about polypterus, and that little piece of wisdom is definitely in there.

I have only had one bichir jump, and it wasn't out of a gap. My 12" Cong jumped right through the closed lid. Thank God I was sitting close and I heard it and was able to rescue him.

If you're asking what you did wrong, this is my answer, you did not properly seal your tank, bichirs are known jumpers and therefore proper lid should be placed on top of their tank.

always put a lid or a net. to avoid your bichirs from taking a headfirst dive at the floor.. good luck
