Jumping Dithers

But now I'm torn.......

Silver Dollars??

or

Tinfoil Barbs??

I'm leaning toward the Barbs, as I can get the Dan's into my Sev Tank.......

Feedback?? It all helps! :headbang2 :headbang2

And again I thank you guys for your experiences, I have been doing this for almost 25 years, and I learn something new every day here. This board kicks azz over some other not named Cichlid Forum........s.

:nilly:

I realize every case has it's own nuances, but I have to believe Tinfoil Barbs are much superior to Silver Dollars. 1)They're much more attractive, 2) they're calmer, and therefore their movement within the tank is more "harmonic" (for lack of a better word), 3) they have the potential to get quite large and striking, making them a part of the display rather than "filler".

Of course you have to go with your gut. Price and availability may be an issue for you but I doubt it. Full disclosure obligates me to admit that I have Silver Dollars in all three of my tanks, but over time they have become quite boring. Boredom is not what attracts us to this hobby!

Good luck!

nah i wouldn't do the barbs. like stated before they can get purty large. and according to ur sig, your about stocked. however if space allows somehow and filtration is excellent, you could try the barbs if you hate silver dollars. also with size the barbs might turn out to be "targets" and not "dithers". well gl on your choice.

tinfoil barbs=bad idea imo. as has already been stated you're already pretty stocked so adding a school of dithers that can grow up to 13" would really over stock your tank. tinfoils are great fish but grow much to large to be used as dithers in that size tank. silver dollars would be much better. :)

I wouldn't expect the Barbs to grow uncontrollably in that set up, but admittedly the potential is there. And they may be more prone to jumping than Dollars, as well. I have no experiences there.

No doubt my own encounters with the two species drive my prejudice.

actually I used to have 2 silver dollars in a similar setup in the same size tank and they grew a lot faster than I expected them to. they were greedy eaters too beating even the cichlids I had with them to the food.

don't get me wrong, I think tinfoils are fantastic with medium to large sized new world cichlids, but a 125 just isn't big enough to accomodate that many foot long fish imo, especially considering how active tinfoils are. :)
