Got a lovely Juruense delivered yesterday, beautiful markings, but he looks quite thin, he then gopt beat up a bit by two 2" long tinfoils (believe it or not) which I have since moved and today he looks much happier as yesterday he wasnt looking good at all.

Thing is I am a little concerned as I cant get him to eat anything, I have tried frozen bloodworm, beefheart, cichlid mix, finely chopped prawns and sinking pellets all to him ignoring the lot.

So firstly any feeding tips (oh I am just off to the shop to buy some live bloodworm, as thats what he was eating in the fish shop apparantly, though I dont like the idea of them tbh) also are they nocturnal feeders? my Limas for example wont eat a thing if I put it in the tank, but turn the lights out at night, drop food in, turn lights back on an hour later and they are both fat as anything.

Juruense the same?

Basicaly any help and/or advice will be much appreciated, thanbks in advance :)

Oh little edit - Normaly I wouldnt be to concerned, its just the fact he looks painfully thin already, so waiting a week to get him to feed doesnt sound a good idea.

Just tested parameters and nitrite is 0, amonia is 0, nitrate is around 10, PH7.

Just took a couple of pics, one you can see how thin he looks while resting, though he has been swimming around today and looks fairly healthy, also the lfs didnt have any live bloodworms, and I know the one 10 miles away doesnt carry it at all, so kinda stuck on trying that.

Am I just being paranoid? :nilly:

Btw, do Juruense get that "I look like I have swallowed a golf ball" belly like Limas, and other shovelnose get?

Jurense cats like a lot of current if I were you I'd set up a powerhead on the bottom of the tank with a rock in front of it. He will perch himself in front of the current if he is healthy. Then try live blood or blackworms with all the lights off. Make sure he cant get stuck to the suction end of the powerhead put a sponge on it or bury it with rocks

'A little thin'? It looks to me like he's just skin and bones, judging by the crease along his back. Are you able to put him in a bare bottom tank with NO tankmates until he's eating and doing better? He needs to get some weight on ASAP, and having the tetras etc. in there with him won't allow you leave any food for any period of time in the tank (not to mention that they could end up as snacks very soon). They do sometimes take time to get eating after being moved, and that could very well be the case.

He can perch and does perch in the current, their is a powerhead as you can see, its powerfull enough that where he sits on the log he is in the current, when he swims above it he is stationary in the current.

As for the tetras being snacks so be it, if he feeds I'm happy regardless of what it is lol.

Unfortunately not able to put in a bare bottom tank, I wound down and broke down my 2 4 foot tanks so I only have this to grow hiom on in and my main tank.

As for food remaining in the tank under the powerhead there are still small bits of prawn, and blood worms are floating in the bubbles on the top still (ofc these will be removed if uneated for to long) so the tetras arent polishing everything off before he has a chance at it.

Mrs has just brought home some live brine shrimp, gonna put some of those in and see, like I said before I have been to the most local fish shop they dont have live bloodworms, the one 10 miles away never has any live food, and the Mrs has been to the only other one within a LONG range and they only had these brine shrimp live.

Hopefully he will eat :(

Looking at him doesnt look like he has been feeding for awhile, maybe he didnt eat in the fish shop either, so OK they were putting live bloodworms IN the tank, but not actualy EATING it :(

Really dont like the idea, but how about some feeders, neons?

Just to get some food in him, not as a long term solution though.

live food. fatten it up with blood worms. guppys, rosies etc. eventually you will be able to get it eating shrimp or other fresh chunks of tillapia etc. my current jur finally ate shrimp after starving it for 3 weeks. throw the food into the current and the jur should take it. goodluck

Thanks for the advice, and I just saw him eat two bloodworms :headbang2

What I did was defrost a block in tank water, then I put that in along with the live brine shrimp to try and trick him basicaly and it semi worked, at least got two bloodworms in him anyway.

That was with lights off.

Think I might try and convince the Mrs to let me buy some neons, then like you say fatten him up a bit, then try and get him on other foods.

Any other advice from anyone more than welcome.
