if your heater was broken that means that electrical current was able to flow into the water. This happened to me once. I went to get a piece of debris out of the tank and got the shock of my life. I was stunned. So i tried again lol, and bam again shocking. I tried in a different spot and no curent. The electricity was following the water flow. Could stress out your fish over time and have all kinds of wierd side effects. I swear by titanium heaters now. Especially when keeping medium to large catfish. Catfish are notorius for eating heaters and breaking them. Sorry for your loss. That is truely sad. If you really want to know why his belly is swollen. Disect him. It will help you learn what to do better in the future when keeping catfish. I don't think those temps that you mentioned are much of an issue. I know it sucks, but trust me now you know what was wrong you have a chance to do things better. We've all been there and done that. Use titanium next time if you are going to have large fish, or put it in your sump if you have a sump filter tank. Good luck, and again it's a very sad loss.

thanks for your advice and support.....this was one of my favorite fish...im out to buy another one...well i dissected it and no gravel so i have no idea...mystery to me....i will now be getting a titanium heater so this doesnt happen again...i never had a problem with these heaters b4 but theres a first time for everything...again thanks.

I walked in the room right now and noticed my juruense was swimming all over the place with its mouth open and a huge belly....i havent fed him for about 2 days and none of the fish are missing....I think he may have swallowed a bunch of gravel so what should i do?!!!! Need help quick!!!
i had a eel do the same thing about a month ago it was swimming fast back and forth with his mouth open the next morning it was dead!! so if you find out what it coulp be please let me know. All other fish in the tank are fine..

I'd say he's spewed, died and the waters turned to poo.... killing the juv. pbass (which can be very fragile at that size) :)

Dunno mate, someone else may need to answer this but i don't think it would take long for the water to go bad after an 8" cat has puked and died in a little growout tank... Again someone else could clear this up but maybe the peat caused the PH to crash???
