Jurunese catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gods how I love jurs! I really, really, really want another. When I eventually get a new tank up and cycled, that will probably be one of the first things to go into it. :)

Thanks, Rob... but mine were unremarkable when I got them and still imho usual-looking at 8"-10", which is when I lost them to unexpected predation in a 1500 gal pond.

I am much surprised Horopgedrik's turned out so nice so far. Perhaps erroneously, I was under an impression that such-patterned jurs were rare, distinct-looking when still small, much more expensive and perhaps called Flash Zebra, at least by the vendors.

My impression is weak because of how seldom we see and talk about larger jurs.

After looking into this extensively, I've come to the conclusion that jurs are in fact light colored fish with dark markings, which is contrary to what most people seem to think. As they get larger, their dark markings fade (like most other fish) and quite unusually among aquarium species, it actually improves their appearance with time.

Oh yeah, thanks for dusting up my memory. Now I remember your hypothesis from ~3-4 years ago. It has merit but I cannot judge because of my ignorance on the subject. What I should do is keep it in mind.

Has this remained your hypothesis or have you substantiated it more or found support in other experts?

Honestly? I did enough research a few years ago to convince myself of the legitimacy of my hypothesis. Unfortunately, this was right about the same time as I got out of the Army, and I never got around to writing it up. I've since lost the research, but kept the conclusion. I suppose that one day I'll get around to doing another one of my write ups, but I dont' know when that will be. I've got a half dozen sitting half finished in the staff section. :/

Ah. So I can conveniently shift the blame on you for not finishing what you had started ;)

Yes, I recall you were rather sure but it'd be nice to get it peer-reviewed by those qualified, is all I am saying.

Will hope and pray you find time and strength to publish it after all.

Thank you my friend.

On the plus side, I've recently been offered a chance to return to my former employment with a company that manages fisheries and invasives in the St. Johns River Water Management District. I will soon be getting paid to think about these sorts of things, and I'm hoping that will really reinvigorate my ability to actually pursue the types of intellectual endeavors that lead to things like the Hydrocynus write up. I have one started for Brachyplatystoma, but I've lost my will to pursue it.
