Ok, so I've heard over and over again that the leucosticta has the spangling on the cheeks and the jurupari doesn't. When I google search these two fish they come up with the same pictures. I like the leucosticta much better and I've also seen some of them with red in them. Is this a different type or come from a different area? How can I tell at a small size (1-2") if it's jurupari or leucosticta? My local fish store has what I think are leucos and they're listed as juru's and he insists they are juru's. So confused on these two fish :nilly:

The fish that used to be known for decades as jurupari has since been determined to be leuco. It is almost a guarantee that any fish you run across is leuco since jurus aren't in the hobby much. The lfs operator just probably doesn't know any better.

The reason you see conflicting photos online is two-fold:

1. Much of the ID's are holdovers from the name change

2. Online research, no matter the subject, is 90% CRAP! ; )

Jurupari has no spangling at all - anywhere.
You can easily tell them apart at 1".

Ok...I'm about positive that I have a leuco and a juru. My one is about 2" with much spangling and the other is 3-4" with virtually none. Kinda bland actually. Wish I could get a pic but they are so skittish, what about the leucos that you see with the red in them, is that a specific species or luck of the draw?

this is my old Satanoperca leucosticta. He died.

It's WAY more complicated than just spangles and no spangles. . . it's more about the breeding strategies. As for the red faced ones, that is a regional color varient. Cool fish all around, Satanopercas are all great fish.

mine is a Satanoperca leucosticta
