may not help. but imagine the day they allow asian aros in the US. over millions of people are gonna want them the day it is allowed. there goes over how many million asian aros across the united states that will pull from the numbers.

if they keep it "illegal" in the states. thats millions of people they dont have to worry about trying to keep them and possible killing them.

thats a good point but with the $$$. millions arent gonna get them. i mean i would love to have an asian but even if legal i couldnt afford it.

if they were legal, they wouldn't be as high priced. asian aros are around the price of some rays or other species. most will have it, some will not. if the day ever comes. i doubt it will. its easier for them to leave things as is and never have to worry about it rather then legalize it then start to have to worry about the numbers again.

Ethnics, I understand where you are coming from, but I don't tottally agree...part of the incredible appeal, the mystique of the asian, is the fact that it is forbidden..We can have them in Europe and I would not exagerate if I was one out of ten guys in Portugal who's had them, if at all 10 guys...In the US ( apart from an initial frenzy, I can agree ) , it would stabilize, the price would do the selection and breeders would surely start to appear reducing the demand from Asia.

those millions you mention don't exist...I've been keeping aro's for ages, with a couple of other guys around here..nothing more. Now MFK is supposed to be the Place, worldwide speaking ( I guess, I just arrived in December ) and us aro guys are what ? 100? add one hundred, two hundred more of non forum, non internet leaning guys and you have a community, worldwide, of 500 aro guys like us...this would lead to a couple of thousand asians in the US, no more than that..

Forbidding leads only to making people want it more..there's no 2 ways about it, imo.

cheers

Miguel

i kinda dissagree with you on how many keepers there are out there. i can think of more then 500 people in san diego alone that keep aros. jus cuz there not on mfk doesn't mean they dont exist. if i go thru east side san diego, i can find over 200+ asian aros, privetly kept and avail for sale. this is only san diego man. i can guarantee you there are already thousands of them thruout the united states as it is with them still illegal. slap a minimum of 20 aros per city, and you still got thousands and thousands that flood the nation.

if and when it happens, permits will be the best way to get the species out there without having a huge flood on that particular species. controling how many go out is a great idea. but me and miguel were talking more about if they jus threw it in the air and said, "they are no longer illegal, have fun owning the species"

yeah, you guys are probably right. the US is a huge market. cannot be measured in european terms..I would agree with the permits..

Protection is keythe reason for the legal ban is to protect them from extinction. However, just like any other protected animal, you could apply for a special license (breeding license) and if you meet the requirements, you will be granted a license to possess and breed these beautiful creatures.
