Just a little question....

You can also use a hair net, put the fern on the nut, then place the hair net over the fern and then put the net under the bottom of the nut (so the fish cant get in) tie it with string, and cut out the net where the "door" is and the burrie the net theys on the bottom in the sand/gravel to stop the nut floating away our the fish getting stuck. just make sure there is no loose net for any one to get caught up in. hope this helps.

Oh...There are holes in them....They look like they were cut in half, cleaned, and then a little "door" is cut out of the front. BUT....The top of the coconut half does have the little "eyes" on it, and one goes all the way through....I could stick the roots in there? Would they eventually grow too much inside and force the fish out? (i know that sounds dumb)

Howdy,

Anything like fishing line, rubber band, hair net will be visible or require a lot of work camouflaging. Furthermore, you will have to remove the nut to remove the line, band, net after a months or two.

Simply stick the rhizome (ca. 1/16-1/8'' diameter for Java fern, 1/4'' for anubia nana) into the hole and wedge it in somehow. Depending on the rhizome shape and hole size, you may not even need anything. If required, use a small rock or so as a shim. The roots themselves are too thin and will not hold. It's gotta be the end of a rhizome (i.e. where the leaves come out of). Since it is the rhizome, and you stick the end into the nut shell, it will not grow any inside the nut. It just serves as anchor. The plant will grow outside, with new roots attaching to the shell. It'll look great.

ps
Don't be afraid of hurting the rhizome. The plant will be fine, since it's the end of the rhizome. They're extremely hardy!

COOL! I have some java in my 55 gallon that I just trimed back, I will grab a little piece and try it!

Thanks for all of the advise guys! I really appreciate it!!!

That sounds like a smart idea HarleyK.

One other method i used (when there were other objects than coconuts, things that don't have holes) is to plant it in some gravel. It will cling to the gravel in a short time, and when you lift it up a couple of pebbles sticks. These will prevent it from floating of and will hold it on the object until it fastens there also. Nothing to remove afterwards. You can't have a high flow tank though, but if you have that any method is had to do.
