I would agree the cranial profile is very dominant looking.
But if there is not a male of the same cichlid species in the tank, many females will often take on very dominant characteristics.
The female haitiensus below would lose much of her dark color, and take on a very masculine profile, whenever I would remove the male, from her tank.
Whereas many Central American cichlid reveal their gender, with a dark or bright colored area in the dorsal. [/URL
All the above are females, and in all the above cases, males do not sport the dark color.
I agree with what you are saying but the dorsal spot is not always a given.
Some females will show this trait some will not.
Some males will also show some darkness although not always.
Thorichthys are often said to be sexable by the dorsal blotch and most females have one but not all.
Female clearly showing the dorsal blotch
Two females with very little blotch
Here are my old pair of carpintis, admittedly they are in spawning dress but the male also showed some darkness to the dorsal.
I also agree about the cranial profile,I have had many females develope this masculine trait.
Female andinoacara
Therefore I guess trying to sex the fish is really not much more than a guess. To me it looks male.Unless were updated I guess we will never know.
I agree, especially with Thorichthys, they do tend to hide gender, and when my carpintus were raising fry, the male would also take on a dorsal blotch, but only when raising fry, as soon as they were removed, he went back to normal dorsal color.
and just in the interest of clarity, here are the male counterparts to the females I posted pics of.
myrnae
sajica
nanoluteus
trimaculatus
beani
tetracanthus
Here also, is the female haitiensus in normal color, with a male in her tank
and the male to compare
Duanes,
That's a lovely looking sajica.
I used to have a pair of sajica a few years ago.I think they are a very overlooked species these days. Its hard to find good quality sajica these days in the UK.
Seeing that picture of your male makes me want some.
Sorry off topic I know.
