We are just outside of town, and we don't have any problems with raccoons, blue herons or any other creatures. Now if you had koi, supposedly they can attract more predators because of their size. Right now I only have goldfish/comets.

do you have problems with raccoons eating your fish? I'm heading towards getting bluegill and letting them breed so i can sell or eat them. That or getting LMB or Channel Cats and raising a true MONSTER

Well I live in Georgia, 1 block away from a fairly large preserve. We get deer, coyotes,Red Tail Hawks, armadillo, raccoons, rabbits, squerrils, chipmunks, oppossum, mice, ticks, ect.... Thats why I was wondering about the fish getting eaten.

you may want to make the pond no shallower than 3 feet and have some shelter/plants for the fish to hide ....that should help

Im planning on the pond being 3ft minimum and then a "hiding" area thats 4-5ft deep. The shallow area will have lili pads and other plants. The deep area will have rocks and branches for protection.

If you have a spot that you know you are going to put a shelf, excavate all the soil instead. Use a 10-12" plastic pipe as the shelve and plant on top of it and place boulders on the sides. The advantages are the shelf will take up less volume since it is hollow and it creates a big tunnel for fish to hide from preds.
