The best way to set up such a system would be to pumpo water from the tank to buckets ABOVE the tank...and let the water flow through it (via gravity) back into the tank. It's called a "dump" filter and works great.

I'd also suggest a mechanical filter layer as the top layer to remove crud before it gets to the bio media.
 
Well pumping water from the tank to a bucket above it would work better but it would look like hell. what about a siphon from the tank into a bucket below it through a smaller hose and then a pump from the bucket to the tank through a larger hose to push the water back into the tank ?

That will work fine if you use the larger hose (pipe) to flow into the filter since it's gravity fed and the smaller hose on the pump since it's pressurized.
 
well im not trying to sound stupid here but if i use the smaller hose to pump the water back into the tank and the larger hose to siphon it from the tank wouldnt the filter fill faster than it returned the water to the tank creating a filter overflow?
