Went to my favorite LFS today to pick up some feeders and salt and damn they got some FX5's in stock and they sell it to me for a good price so I took the plunge and added another one for my 450g that hasn't arrived yet....(Just got some info that my tank was just finished building yesterday). Anyhow back to filtration, now that I have 3 x FX5's and 2 x AC110's for the 450g should I load the 3rd FX5 with Biomax or use it as mech filtration? My other 2 is already loaded with Biomax in 2 of the trays. What do u guys think? All I can say is my energy bill is going to show a big difference. Running 4 FX5's total now:nilly: and I might be adding a 5th FX5 down the road for my 225g.

I have a 265 gal with South and Central American cichs I am running 2 fx 5 with ceramic on the bottom and top 2 trays Eheim pro substate and the foam that comes with it 2 ac 110 for carbon and a cascade 1500 full of pro substrate I have 20 to 25 fish all betterthen 6 inches 5 over 12 inches keeps tank clean and do monthly water changes 25 to 50 % and change carbon 4 to 6 weeks

I would love to DIY sump but there are a few reasons I choose not to because

1. I work full time hours and sometimes overtime and my schedule just changed to 5:30-6:00 am shifts so I don't have the time to build one.

2. I don't know jack about plumbing and don't really have the time to learn it. I like to relax when I'm off work.

3. Too many tanks and too much water in my 1000 sq ft condo suite.

4. I just don't want to deal with it if any problems with the sump. Like to keep it simple and easy.

its quite simple really, and a lot cheaper than 4 FX5s!!!!!! if you use ceramic media, you dont even need dividers. just drop it in, cant get any easier than that :)

Ya the cost of the energy is not a huge issue unless my landlord says something. The energy is included in my rent but she hasn't called me yet to complaint or anything. I'm not an energy expert but I know before when I had to pay for my own energy for a bigger place which was 1400 sq ft I would use about 80-90 bux energy costs per 2 months without any fish tanks and being home all the time. I think here in Canada our energy is not as high as USA and we get charged every 2 months instead of per 1 month. But now I rent and I'm barely home cuz of work and when I am I barely use any energy myself. I'm just home for dinners, work on my fish tanks and relax for a bit then sleep, then next morning off to work then repeat. So the energy costs should compensate as if I was at home all the time using energy without fish tanks.

I was being sarcastic about the energy costs and I hope my landlord doesn't say anything of it hehe.

At $0.08 per kWh (which is approx. what my electricity costs) and the FX5 consuming 51 watts, it would cost just about $2.96 (USD)/month for an FX5
:D

that should be plenty of filtration. you could use scrubbies in the 3rd fx5 if you want to spend the money for biomax.
