Just an FRT fyi........

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This should be stickied somewhere on MFK so others realize what they are supporting.

In other cases like fishing and killing/eating endangered species people are quick to defend someone making a living to support their poor family. This is the same concept, i'm sure the poachers aren't exactly rich westerners.

i just got a 09 baby. the pet sore had about 10 of these little guys swimming around. about 4 people i know have these in right now. all about the same size. at least 09 hatchlings. some look awful as if they were in travel for a long time with out proper care. the prices my connects are offering is very concerning. these pics are sad but just a reality of how we get these turtles. thanks for posting

This is a prime example on how captive breeding can and would do so much for the reptile trade. i know smuggling isnt the same as importing but they are put through the same type of condidtions

i know it happens to other animals as well but it happens to often with reptiles.

This is very sad

Maybe this is the perfect excuse for me to find some very large long term captives, build a 5000G pond/tank and try to breed them. or anyone else who wants to try it.
Someone really should try breed them in captivity, if theres any way we can minimise things like happening then we in this hobby should try to do so.
Plus we get an interesting project :D

Someone should try it.I could see an outdoor enclosure in one our year round warm states but I read that they take so long before they are able to breed.

Oh god, thats horrible! Having owned a couple (which i now feel bad and conflicted about) they are such inteligent animals with a real personality i couldnt have seen any harm come to mine, it would have been unbearable to even think of them being made to suffer, they were the reason i upgraded from a 150G to a 350G tank (even though they were still only reasoably small)

Thats just awful, taking hatchlings from nesting areas!!! How the hell do these people expect them to keep in existing in their natural habitat if they just take all the hatchlings!
I dont understand how people can be thet cruel, there is no more true saying than "money is the root of all evil"
It really makes me sick to think of the amount of these fantastic animals that have died, no more than a few weeks into their lifes:(
There are no words.......

Personally, they shouldn't be kept in the Aquarium trade......May not be the favorable opinion in a Fish forum, but I've seen too many 10" FRTs that should be 15-20".........

They are actually relatively stable population wise for the time being. Alot of their habitats are virtually in-accessable and I'm sure some of it has never been touched by Humans.........This goes on all around the world with alot of Turtle species, including Sea Turtles, so it's not really unique......

It comes down to how many hands they've been through before they're offered to the Public. You can tell the difference between the Turtles that have been moved around and the ones that havn't. The condition and behaviors are complete opposites........

Captive breeding isn't going to do much for these guys. All but a few hardcore Turtle keepers have the space and resources to do so.........Zoos, whether Public or Private run into the same issues, and the AZA accredited Institutions would never sell/trade to the public anyway. You also run into the problem that most confiscated animals face. That is the fact that 9 times out of 10 they are still property of the Country of Origin. Not much you can do with Offspring at that point........

This is how almost all animals for food or the pet trade gets shipped and moved around. If these FRT weren’t being shipped for trade… they would probably get eating by the local people, packed the same way to the local market. I just tell myself my FRT is going to live way better life then if it was in the wild. It doesn’t know it’s my pet… it just think it’s normal when I look at her for 10 minutes. Dogs, cats, any kind of pet; when you buy them just treat them good, they will be living life longer then if in the wild and healthier also.

This is why the human race is the most dangerous, most invasive, and most heartless/cruel species out there....IMO.

That's not how they get moved around for the Pet trade. IATA regulations govern how they get packed, and that shipment would've been confiscated for how many IATA violations it would of racked up........Hatchling Turtles aren't eaten by the locals........The Eggs are, but not like they used to be........People realize a live Turtle is worth more alive than dead.........

I have to laugh at the quality of life thing though........A captive FRT is more than likely not going to live out its full potential lifespan in captivity ( 100 years + ), and they're a whole lot healthier both physically and mentally in the habitats they come from.......

Realistically, 90% of FRT keepers don't have the ability to keep that animal healthy and happy for its potential lifespan. It's just the way it is, unfortunately. The same can be said for other animals. I'm all for Private keepers being able to keep what they want, as long as they have the ability to do so...........Knowing ones limitations is the first step to being a successful keeper.......
